Softball Splits Pair of Sunday Games

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 14-5 victory over Black Hills State in six innings before suffering an extra-inning 9-6 loss to Minnesota Crookston on Sunday afternoon in the Air-Supported Dome.
 
After the 1-1 afternoon, the Beavers are 4-3 on the season.
 
Game One: Minot State 14, Black Hills State 5 (Six Innings)
 
How It Happened
  • Black Hills State opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Karlee Coughlin ripped a double to right field before scoring on an RBI triple from Lauren Cowden. Cowden scored on the play after a throwing error by the Yellow Jackets to tie the game at two.
  • The Beavers took the lead when Kiera Shwaluk scored on an RBI groundout from Julia Suchan after being hit by the pitch to reach base.
  • Coughlin led off the fourth inning with a double before Cowden and Zoya Robbins reached on walks. Jamie Odlum pinched hit for Haley Hernandez and blasted a two-RBI single up the middle.
  • Randi Wright followed with an RBI single of her own to give the Beavers a 5-2 advantage.
  • Black Hills State responded with three runs in bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at five.
  • Rianna Aasen recorded a pinch hit two-RBI single and Julia Suchan added a two-RBI double to right, extending the Minot State lead to 9-5. The Beavers tacked on four more runs as Minot State erupted for eight runs to jump ahead 14-5 in the inning.

  • Coughlin led the Beavers with three hits while Wright added two hits.
  • Suchan posted a team-high three RBIs, followed by Coughlin, Odlum and Aasen with two RBIs apiece.
  • Jordyn Staples started in the circle for Minot State, tossing three innings while surrendering five runs on six hits.
  • Monica Rivera improved to 1-1 on the season while pitching 1.1 innings of work and not allowing a run.
  • Laura Mendez picked up her first save of the season with 1.2 shutout innings.

How It Happened
  • The Golden Eagles plated a pair of runs in the first inning and added a run in the second inning to take a 3-0 after two innings.
  • Cowden opened the fourth with a ground-rule double and scored on an RBI single by Robbins to cut the deficit in half.
  • Minot State cut the UMC lead in half when Wright's RBI groundout scored Melissa Estrada in the fourth inning.
  • The Beavers added a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Suchan reached on an error to score Aasen and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Alina Gonzalez to give Minot State a 4-3 lead.
  • Minnesota Crookston tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI single.
  • The Golden Eagles scored five runs in the eighth inning, including four from a grand slam to jump ahead 9-4.
  • Wright added an RBI single while Hernandez scored on a throw error to add two more runs in the 9-6 loss.

  • Maggie Mercer and Wright tallied a team-high two hits each while five other Beavers recorded a hit.
  • Kylie Patrick started in the circle, tossing 1.1 innings while giving up three runs.
  • Mendez dropped to 1-2 on the season after allowing six runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work.
 
What's Next
The Beavers take a two-week break from competition before returning to host Mary, MSU Moorhead, Minnesota Crookston and Valley City State for a weekend filled with softball in the Air-Supported Dome on Feb. 22-24.
