LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Beavers opened their 2019 season at the Desert Stinger tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. At Majestic Park. The Beavers lost to Northwest Nazarene 7-8 and to Humboldt State University 1-13.
Maggie Mercer leads the Beavers with two runs on 3-5 at bats. Five Beavers provided RBIs to help put numbers on the board for Minot State. The Beavers fell short to Northwest Nazarene in their first match up of the Desert Stinger tournament, they put up seven runs to the Nighthawks eight, while leaving 11 on base.
To start their tournament run, the Beavers started the first inning against Northwest Nazarene with three runs on three hits and three errors. The Nighthawks responded with four runs, four hits in the bottom of the first. Minot State put left one on base in the 2
nd while Northwest Nazarene tallied one run on one hit to increase their lead to two 5-3. Both teams were scoreless in the third, followed by Minot State's two runs on two hits in the fourth to tie the game momentarily. Northwest Nazarene responded with one run of their own to take the lead once more. Minot State was scoreless in the fifth and sixth inning, while Northwest Nazarene extended their lead 8-5 with two runs in the sixth. Trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Minot State fell short scoring only two runs to end the game 8-7 against Northwest Nazarene.
In the 2018 Desert Stinger tournament, Minot State bested #5 Humboldt State – in their repeat matchup in 2019 tournament, the Beavers lost to Humboldt State University 13-1. Only three Beavers made contact for hits in the game (
Julia Suchan,
Karlee Coughlin, and
Randi Wright) with
Karlee Coughlin hitting in the lone RBI of the game. Humboldt State came out strong to start the game 7-0 and tacked on another in the second to increase their lead to 8-0. The Beavers were scoreless until the fourth score 8-1. The Jacks looked to cut the game short with five runs in the sixth inning to increase their lead to 13-1. The Beavers could not put enough runs on the board, and the game ended at the end of six innings.
The loss to Humboldt State puts Minot State 0-2 in tournament play. The Beavers will continue their run at the Desert Stinger tournament with games tomorrow against MSU Billings at 1:30p.m. and San Francisco State at 6:30 p.m.
