Softball Plays to Split at SCSU

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Minot State softball picked up a 3-1 victory in game one before falling 12-4 in the second game of a doubleheader at St. Cloud State on Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn.
 
After Saturday's games, Minot State is 17-12 overall on the season and 6-6 in NSIC play.
 
Game One: Minot State 3, St. Cloud State 1
 
How It Happened
  • After three scoreless innings, St. Cloud State took a 1-0 lead with its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Maggie Mercer reached on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning before scoring on Lauren Cowden's RBI single.
  • Julia Suchan broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI double in the top of the seventh to bring home Melissa Estrada.
  • The Beavers added to their lead when Kiera Shwaluk's RBI triple scored Julia Suchan.

  • Kiera Shwaluk went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
  • Jamie Odlum, Cowden and Suchan recorded one hit.
  • Laura Mendez improved to 8-7 on the season after tossing the complete-game.

How It Happened
  • SCSU raced out to a quick lead with five runs in the first inning.
  • Minot State cut into the deficit with a pair of runs from an RBI double by Rianna Aasen and Alina Gonzalez's sacrifice fly in the second inning.
  • The Huskies responded with a trio of runs in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Cowden launched a two-run home run to make it an 8-4 game in the top of the third.
  • For the second consecutive inning, the Huskies responded with three runs before adding a run in the fifth inning to clinch the 12-4 run-rule victory.

  • Cowden went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.
  • Odlum also was perfect at the plate with three hits.
  • Zoya Robbins started in the circle and fell to 7-4 on the season.
