Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Slow Start Does Beaver Men's Basketball No Favors in Defeat

(MINOT, N.D.) -- Minot State men's basketball was in a battle with Southwest Minnesota State on Friday night. In what seems to be becoming a theme, the Beavers fell in another tight matchup. The Beavers started relatively slowly offensive with their top two scorers combing for just two points late in the first half. Despite working back into the game with a tremendous defensive effort and some big shots in the second half, the Beavers fell.

To start the first half, both teams struggled to baskets early on. After two minutes, the only scoring play was a free throw hit by Trevor Rothstein. It did not improve much going into the first media timeout with the two squads locked into a low scoring defensive battle and Minot State leading 7-5. The Mustangs were able to eventually get some buckets after taking a 10-3 run into the under-10 media timeout. From that point to the end of the first half, the Beavers were ice cold, scoring just seven points in the last ten minutes. Going into the second half, the Beavers trailed 31-18.

In the second half, the Beaver offense was much more potent. However, Minot State would not begin to get within reaching distance until late in the game. The Beavers started their run before the five-minute media timeout after Sam Ohlrich hit a big three-pointer to cut the Mustang lead to 52-44. Kobe Jackson would follow with a timely three, cutting the deficit to just five points. The two teams would trade baskets back and forth until three free throws were hit by Rothstein to cut the lead to only four points. Moments later, Rothstein would make another big play, hitting a three to shrink the Mustang lead to 59-57. On the other end, the Beavers fouled, and Kenny Byers would sink a pair of free throws. The Beavers were not able to get any points on their last possession, which spent the remainder of the time on the clock, leading to the Beavers falling 61-57.

In a slow offensive game, the Beavers were led by Rothstein, and Kyle Beisch scoring 13 apiece. Kody Dwyer let the team, grabbing eight rebounds. Max Cody, despite his lower than usual scoring output, was a significant factor, dishing out nine assists.

The Beavers look to get back on track tomorrow afternoon, facing the University of Sioux Falls.
