(MINOT, N.D.) -- The streak is over! The Beaver men's basketball team battled one of the better teams in the Northern Sun on Saturday evening. Minot State was able to prove that they are a team to be reckoned with, knocking off the University of Sioux Falls with a
Kobe Jackson three-pointer with 2.7 seconds to play.
One of the Beavers' most significant issues during the losing streak was their inability to start games off well. In this game, that was not the case. The Beavers were right in the mix to start and throughout the first half. Going into the first media timeout the Beavers were trailing 14-10. Coming out of the timeout the Beavers showed that they would not fade, scoring seven straight. The Beavers would go on another run, this time 5-0, causing a Sioux Falls timeout with the Beaver lead extended to 26-19. Sioux Falls would go into the locker with some momentum, outscoring MSU 10-4 over the last 5:50 of the first half to take a 37-35 lead into the locker room.
The second half was an absolute battle between the two squads, with neither team going up by more than one possession until the Cougars went on a 10-0 run with around ten minutes to play. The run would give them a 52-46. The Beavers would come right back, scoring five straight, keyed by a Sam Ohlrich three-pointer. Following that, the teams would lock down defensively, with the next basket not coming until a Cougar layup two minutes later to give them a 54-51 lead. Minot State would continue to battle. Kyle Beisch would score the next four points at the free-throw line, cutting the deficit to one each time. Beisch would continue to be a key down the stretch as he would score the next three points and assist on a layup by Ohlrich and hit another layup to give MSU a 62-59 lead with just over three minutes to play. A minute and a half later, Max Cody hit a big-time turn around fadeaway late in the shot clock to retake the lead for the Beavers 64-63. On the next possession, Cody would sink another tough shot giving Minot State a three-point lead. Sioux Falls would answer back, first hitting a free throw, then a tough layup to tie it up at 66. Then, it was Kobe Jackson's time to shine. The seldom-used true freshman would step up in a big way. Beisch brought the ball up the court for the Beavers then hit Cody, who looked like he was going to be the one to take the last shot. The Cougar defense would collapse on Cody, leaving Jackson unattended for a corner three. He did not hesitate and drilled it with 2.7 seconds to play. The Beavers, up three, would go on to foul Sioux Falls who would intentionally miss, but Trevor Rothstein secured the rebound and the win for the Beavers.
Minot State had four players score in double figures with Beisch leading the charge with 18. Kody Dwyer had 11 before an early exit due to foul trouble. Cody and Ohlrich also scored 11. Jackson led the team in rebounding with six. Meanwhile, Cody had nine assists for the second consecutive night.
