Career High from Beisch Not Enough as Beavers Fall

(Mankato, Minn.) -- The Beaver men's basketball team could not overcome their slow start, despite battling back.

The Beavers fell in Mankato to Minnesota State 87-79.

The Beavers started slowly in the first half as Minnesota State got out to a 10-2 lead early. The Beavers would start hitting shots but could not cut into the lead, trailing 17-7 with 12:12 to go in the first half. Every time the Beavers would cut the deficit to single digits, the Mavericks would answer. Minot State cut it to 19-10, and Minnesota State outscored the Beavers 11-4 to expand the lead to 16. Minot State would continue to chip away, however, getting the deficit back into single digits at 32-23. Minnesota State would close the first half with a 43-31 lead.

The two teams would continue to answer each other early in the second half. With the Beavers trailing 51-40, they would finally make some headway, going on a 14-4 run, cutting the Maverick lead to 55-54. The Mavericks would hit a pair of threes over the next few minutes, however, to expand the lead to 66-59. Minnesota State would continue to keep the Beavers at arms' reach, leading 81-71 with 4:21 to play. The Beavers would answer with four straight to cut the Maverick lead to six, at 81-75. This would be the closest the Beavers would get. The Mavericks scored five straight to extend the lead to 86-75 with 1:28 to play. The Beavers would again cut it to eight, but it would not be enough as the Beavers fell 87-79.

The Beavers were led by Kyle Beisch, setting a new career-high, scoring 30 points. Max Cody and Kody Dwyer joined him in double figures, scoring 13 and 11 points. Dwyer led the team with six rebounds; meanwhile, Cody led with six assists.
