Beaver Men's Basketball Falls in Heartbreaker

(St. Paul, Minn.) -- The Beaver men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker tonight. Concordia-St. Paul defeated the Beavers in a one-possession game, which has become a theme for Minot State. The Beavers have lost eight conference games, and six of them have been by three points or less, with a seventh by single digits.

The first few minutes of the game were very low scoring, with the first point coming on a Golden Bear free throw with 16:13 to go in the first half. At the first media timeout, the Beavers had a 2-1 lead with under fifteen minutes remaining. The offense would begin to pick up around the fourteen-minute mark with each team scoring. The Beavers had a 6-3 lead with 13:44 remaining. Minot State would start to roll. Max Cody and Kyle Beisch would hit back-to-back three-pointers to key a 12-2 run, taking a 19-10 lead with 7:44 to play in the first half. Beisch would hit a three to extend the Beaver lead to 25-15 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. From there, Concordia-St. Paul would begin to battle back, going on a 5-0 run before another Beisch three stopped the Golden Bear momentum. Going into the locker room, the Beavers held a 32-26 lead.

Early in the second half, a layup by Cody and three-pointer from Trevor Rothstein would again give the Beavers a double-digit lead, 41-31. Over the next 2:47, Concordia-St. Paul outscored the Beavers 12-6 to pull the game to a one-possession game. The Beavers answered with five straight, stretching the lead to 50-43. The back-and-forth play would continue with the Golden Bears cutting the score to 50-49 with 10:23 to play, setting up what would be a fantastic finish. Both teams would trade leads over the next several minutes until Concordia-St. Paul took a 60-58 lead with 5:31 to play. With 2:19 to play, CSP carried a 69-63 lead. The Beavers would battle back, cutting it to 69-67 and having possession of the ball with 11 seconds to go. Beisch would go hard to the basket, use a fantastic ball fake to draw a foul to have a chance to tie it up. Unfortunately, he would make one of two forcing the Beavers to foul CSP on the next possession. Cody had one final three quarter court heave fall short, and the Beavers fell 71-68 for another heartbreaking defeat.

Max Cody led the Beavers in scoring with 24, Cody also added five rebounds and four assists to tie for the team lead in each. Kyle Beisch scored 19, and also added four assists, and five rebounds. Sam Ohlrich joined them in double figures with 10 points and added five rebounds.
