Beaver Women Dominate Second Half, Defeat Winona State

(MINOT, N.D.) – The Minot State University women's basketball team rode a dominating second half to a victory over Winona State University. The Beavers outscored the Warriors 41-20 in the second half to lead to the big victory. 
 
In the first quarter, the two teams battled to start before the Winona State offense became tough to stop while Minot State's offense slowed. At the end of the quarter, the Warriors led 24-15.
 
The second quarter started a bit slowly with neither team scoring until Haley Hildenbrand hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 24-17. Immediately following that, Winona State went on a 5-0 run leading to a timeout with Minot State down 29-17. Over the next two minutes, the Beavers would score four straight, now trailing 29-21. The Beavers scored four straight to cut the deficit to 33-27 going into the half.
 
Hildenbrand hit another jumper to start the second half on a good note for the Beavers cut the lead to four. The two teams would continue to battle over the next few minutes with the Warriors leading 39-34 with 5:50 to go. Anna Counts hit a layup on the next possession, and going into the media timeout at 4:31, the Beavers trailed 41-36. At the 1:42 mark, Mariah Payne hit a three cutting the Winona State lead to one point. Calli Delsman hit two free throws to tie up the game at 42 with 1:16 to go. On the next possession, Hildenbrand hit another jumper, and to end the first half, Lucy Chapman made a layup to give the Beavers a 46-44 lead going into the fourth quarter.
 
The fourth quarter went the Beavers way both offensively and defensively. The Beavers got out quickly and outscored Winona State 13-2 through the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. With 4:25 to play, the Beavers were in control, holding a 62-46. From there, the Beavers were able to coast to a 68-53 win.
 
Mariah Payne, Haley Hildenbrand, Bethany Theodore, and Calli Delsman each scored in double figures, scoring 19, 16, 12, and 10. Anna Counts led the team with ten rebounds. Delsman and Hildenbrand added nine and eight rebounds of their own. Theodore led the team with five assists.
