Marshall, Minn. --
Amber Stevahn scored 22 points, but the Minot State Women's Basketball team fell to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 74-62 on the road Saturday.
The Beavers (0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Stevahn with 22 points.
Kate Head added 12 points and five assists and
Calli Delsman added five points and a team-high seven rebounds.
After falling behind 12-7, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 5:23 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from
Mollie Wilson, to take a 13-12 lead. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 19-15.
Minot State then began the second quarter by going on a 5-0 run to take a 20-19 lead. The Mustangs then came stampeding back to take a 34-28 lead heading into halftime.
Southwest Minnesota State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 52-39 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Stevahn, to trim its deficit to 52-45 with 39 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the period. Minot State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.
Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 74-62. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 17 points in the paint.
