Stevahn Leads Scorers Again, Beaver Ladies Drop Second Game to Mustangs

 
MARSHALL, MINN. -- The Minot State women's basketball team got a 36-point performance from the bench, but fell 73-58 to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on the road Sunday.
 
The Beavers (0-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Amber Stevahn, who had 13 points. Calli Delsman tacked on 10 points off the bench and Anna Counts added eight points and two steals.
 
Minot State shared the ball well in Sunday's game, racking up 15 assists on 25 made field goals. Individually, Kate Head led the way for the Beavers with six assists.
 
The Minot State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Sunday's game, forcing 13 Mustang turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Counts' two steals led the way individually for the Beavers.
 
How It Happened
Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-9 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 35-22 halftime deficit.
 
Southwest Minnesota State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 41-24 advantage before Minot State went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Counts, to trim its deficit to 41-32 with 4:53 to go in the third. The Mustangs countered and stretched its lead to 55-40 heading into the fourth. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 18 points in the paint.
 
Southwest Minnesota State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-52 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Sydney Andersen's layup, to shrink the deficit to 73-58 with 18 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.
