Beaver Women's Hoops Sweeps Minnesota-Crookston After Second-Straight Stevahn Double-Double

MINOT, N.D. -- Amber Stevahn notched her second-consecutive a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds to help the University of Minot State women's basketball team knock off the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles 59-47 at home Saturday.

The Beavers (2-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Stevahn. Haley Hildenbrand added 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench and Bethany Theodore chipped in as well with 11 points and five steals off of the bench.

Stevahn pulled down six offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Minot State, grabbing 10 boards and turning them into 10 second chance scores.

Minot State's defense held Minnesota-Crookston to only 26.7 percent shooting from the field, including 13.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed 11 second chance points while Minot State cleared 32 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened
After falling behind 4-1, Minot State went on a 10-0 run with 5:28 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Hildenbrand, to take an 11-4 lead. The Beavers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 15-8 advantage. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 15 points close to the basket.

Minnesota-Crookston rallied to take a 17-15 lead before Minot State went on an 8-0 run starting at the 4:19 mark in the second period to take a 23-17 lead. The Golden Eagles cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 25-21 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State saw non-starters score six of its 10 total points off the bench in the quarter.

Minot State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Hildenbrand, to expand its lead further to 39-29 with 3:25 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 43-34 edge. Minot State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 13 of the team's 18 third-quarter points.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Stevahn's layup, to grow the lead to 55-45 with 2:24 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 59-47 win. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
