MINOT, N.D. --Â The Minot State women's basketball team out-rebounded the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets 24-21 on the way to a 55-52 victory at home Friday during the "Education Game" with more than 650 school kids from around northern North Dakota in attendance.
The Beavers had two players score in double figures, led by Amber Stevahn, who had 18 points. Kate Head added 10 points and two steals and Mollie Wilson added six points.
The Minot State defense held Black Hills State shooters to only 36.4 percent from the field. The Beavers also kept Megan Engesser to 3-of-12 shooting and nine points in the game. The Yellow Jackets did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only seven offensive rebounds and scored three second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-4, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 4:00 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Emma Mogen, to narrow its deficit to 12-10. The Beavers continued to narrow the gap and tied the game at 14-14 heading into the second quarter. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of its 14 points close to the basket.
Black Hills State then took a 25-17 lead before Minot State responded with a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Wilson, to narrow its deficit to 25-22. The Beavers were unable to narrow the gap further, and entered halftime with a 27-24 deficit.
Black Hills State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 30-24 advantage before Minot State went on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Stevahn, to grab a 34-30 lead with 5:07 to go in the third. Before the end of the third period, the Beavers added to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 41-35 edge. Minot State took advantage of three Black Hills State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.
The Beavers held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring eight of its 14 total points.
