MINOT, ND --Jaxon Gunville collected 23 points and Max Cody added 20 and the Minot State men's basketball team knocked off the Yellowstone Christian Centurions 112-50 at home Wednesday.
Gunville and Cody's stellar scoring performances led the Beavers (4-0) in the contest. Gunville tacked on five rebounds and Cody added seven assists. Melvin Newbern also helped out with a double double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Sam Ohlrich pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead the Minot State offense which grabbed 19 boards and turned them into 23 second chance points.
The Minot State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 14 turnovers while committing eight. Those takeaways turned into 27 points on the other end of the floor. Cam'ron Dunfee led the way individually for the Beavers with two steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 30-10 advantage, Minot State went on a 12-0 run with 8:59 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Cody, to increase its lead to 42-10. The Beavers then added eight points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 63-23 advantage. Minot State capitalized on eight turnovers in the period, turning them into 18 points on the other end of the floor.
Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 90-41 before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Mason Hedberg's three, to grow the lead to 101-41 with 6:12 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 112-50 win. Minot State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting nine shots from deep to score 27 of its 49 points.
