BILLINGS, MT --Melvin Newbern totaled 14 rebounds, and the Minot State men's basketball team beat the Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets 77-59 on the road Saturday.
Newbern added seven points to his 14-rebound game for the Beavers (5-0). Kody Dwyer helped out with 16 points and three blocks and Cam'ron Dunfee chipped in with 18 points.
Minot State utilized excellent ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 19 assists on 30 made field goals. Max Cody's eight assists paced the Beavers and Newbern also added three assists of his own.
Minot State's defense held Montana State-Billings to only 34.5 percent shooting from the field. The Yellowjackets did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with six offensive rebounds and managed two second chance points while Minot State cleared 36 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 22-17, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 5:54 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Dwyer, to take a 24-22 lead. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 27-26.
After intermission, Minot State managed to gain control and had a 39-36 lead before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Jaxon Gunville's three, to grow the lead to 50-36 with 10:52 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 77-59 win. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 51 points in the lane.
