MINOT, ND --Five Beavers put up double-digit points, but Minot State fell to the Mary Marauders 78-74 at home Tuesday.
The Beavers (5-1, 0-1) had five players score in double figures, led by Cam'ron Dunfee, who had 18 points and two steals. Jaxon Gunville tacked on 13 points from the bench and Melvin Newbern helped out with 12 points and two steals.
Minot State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 16 assists on 27 made field goals. Max Cody's five assists were the most for the Beavers and Ben Bohl also added five assists of his own.
Minot State forced 18 Mary turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Tuesday's game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Newbern led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 39-29 advantage, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 1:36 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Eli Cave, to increase its lead to 45-29. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 45-32 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 45 points.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Dunfee's three, to grow the lead to 50-34 with 18:45 to go in the contest. Mary then asserted control, outscoring the Beavers 44-24 the rest of the way to hand Minot State the 78-74 loss. Minot State capitalized on six Mary turnovers in the period, collecting eight points off those turnovers.
