Five Beavers score in double digits in Minot State's 85-71 win over Mary

MINOT, ND -- Five Beavers scored in double figures as Minot State defeated the Mary Marauders 85-71 at home Tuesday.

The Beavers (3-5, 1-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Anna Counts, who had 18 points and nine rebounds. Lucy Chapman added 15 points and Amber Stevahn chipped in as well with 13 points and six rebounds.

Minot State did an extraordinary job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 23 assists while turning the ball over only eight times. Individually, Kate Head dished out the most for the Beavers with seven assists. Natasha Elliott also contributed with four assists of her own.

How It Happened

After falling behind 16-13, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 2:58 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Counts, to take a 19-16 lead. The Beavers maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 22-19 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points.

Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 2:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Head, to increase its lead to 46-36. The Marauders cut into that lead, but the Beavers kept a 48-39 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 26 points.

Minot State continued to preserve the halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Counts, to expand its lead to 66-50 with 4:08 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Marauders cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 70-57 edge. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.

The Beavers coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Marauders 15-14 in the fourth quarter. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 15 total points.
