Minot State falls short in six point loss to Montana State-Billings

BILLINGS, MT --The University of Minot State women's basketball team came up short in a 72-66 loss to the Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets on the road Friday.

The Beavers had three players score in double figures, led by Amber Stevahn, who had 18 points and two steals. Kate Head tacked on 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Anna Counts chipped in as well with 11 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Led by Counts' three offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 10 second chance points.

The Minot State defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 14 Montana State-Billings turnovers while only committing eight. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Counts and Stevahn led the way with two steals each individually for the Beavers.

How It Happened

Minot State kept it close in the first quarter, as they entered the second frame down 16-14.

Montana State-Billings built a 30-23 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Head, to narrow its deficit to 30-28. This score would hold until halftime.

Minot State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Beavers faced a 51-44 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Minot State took advantage of seven Montana State-Billings turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off takeaways.

The Beavers narrowed its deficit in the fourth quarter, but could not get over the hump, losing 72-66.
