MINOT, N.D. -- Melvin Newbern knocked down a buzzer-beating shot with just two seconds left in the game to lead the Minot State men's basketball team over the visiting Bemidji State Beavers, 80-78, at home Saturday in NSIC men's basketball action.
The Beavers (10-3 overall, 4-3 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Cam'ron Dunfee, who had 19 points and four assists. Kody Dwyer tacked on 18 points and six rebounds, and Newbern helped out with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Dwyer pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead the Minot State offense which grabbed 11 boards and turned them into 10 second-chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 20-17, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 9:42 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Eli Cave, to take a 23-20 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 36-35 advantage. Minot State did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 36 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 50-48 before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 57-48 with 11:53 to go in the contest. The visiting Beavers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still held on for the 80-78 win. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 44 points in the lane.
