Minot State shoots 50 percent from deep, knocks off Northern State 79-69 in Max Cody's record breaking night

MINOT, ND --The Minot State men's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on the way to a 79-69 victory over the Northern State Wolves at home Thursday.

The Beavers (7-1, 1-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Kody Dwyer, who had 24 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Max Cody added 16 points and seven assists and Melvin Newbern chipped in as well with a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Minot State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 18 assists on 33 made field goals. Cody's seven assists led the distribution list for the Beavers. Cody's seven assists move him into sole possession of first place on the Minot State all time assists list. 

Minot State did a great job disrupting Northern State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Dwyer's three rejections led the way individually for the Beavers.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 21-19 advantage, Minot State went on a 9-0 run with 9:47 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Dwyer, to increase its lead to 30-19. The Beavers then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 44-29 advantage. Minot State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 28 of its 44 points close to the basket.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 60-49 with 9:31 to go in the contest. The Wolves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 79-69 win. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 35 points in the lane.
