MSU Attack Stifled by Zone Defense, Beavers Lose Despite Delsman's Double-Double

MINOT, N.D.Calli Delsman recorded an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double but the Beavers fell to Northern State by a score of 87-58.
 
Delsman's night led the way for the Beavers (3-8, 3-6). Kate Head added seven points and two steals and Amber Stevahn helped out with five points. Northern State's (4-7, 3-6) zone defense was just too much for the Beavers.
 
Delsman pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Minot State, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into 19 second-chance points.
 
How It Happened
After falling behind 14-9, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 1:18 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Delsman, to take a 15-14 lead. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-15.
 
The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 42-26 halftime deficit.
 
Minot State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Beavers faced a 69-40 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Minot State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 14 third-quarter points.
 
Northern State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 76-46 advantage before Minot State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Natasha Elliott's layup, to shrink the deficit to 22 with 4:49 to go in the contest. Northern State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 87-58. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring all of its 18 total points.
