Late Rally from MSU Moorhead Dooms Beavers in Weekend Opener

MOORHEAD, MINN. -- The Minot State women's basketball team took a 57-56 lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 86-76 to the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons on the road Friday.
 
The Beavers (2-7, 2-5) had five players score in double figures, led by Lucy Chapman, who had 17 points. Anna Counts tacked on 14 points and six rebounds and Calli Delsman helped out with 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals off the bench.
 
Minot State forced 15 Minnesota State-Moorhead turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Delsman's two steals led the way for Minot State.
 
How It Happened
After falling behind 19-13, Minot State went on a 9-0 run with 3:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Amber Stevahn, to take a 22-19 lead. The Beavers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 26-23 advantage.
 
Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 8:13 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Delsman, to increase its lead to 33-23. The Dragons then came roaring back to take a 43-38 lead heading into halftime.
 
After intermission, Minot State cut its deficit to 51-49 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Mollie Wilson, to grab a 55-51 lead with 2:28 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Dragons had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-56 edge. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.
 
Minnesota State-Moorhead then erased the Minot State lead in the game's final quarter for an 86-76 comeback victory. Minot State pulled down three offensive rebounds to score four second chance points out of 19 total in the period
