Minot State wins turnover battle and takes down Concordia-Saint Paul 98-54

MINOT, ND --The Minot State men's basketball team had 10 fewer turnovers than Concordia-Saint Paul in a 98-54 victory against the Golden Bears at home Saturday.

The Beavers (12-4, 6-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Melvin Newbern, who had 20 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Max Cody added 16 points, five assists and two steals and Cam'ron Dunfee chipped in as well with 16 points, four assists and two steals.

Minot State out-rebounded Concordia-Saint Paul 42-27 in Saturday's game, led by Newbern's eight boards.

Minot State's defense held Concordia-Saint Paul to only 29.1 percent shooting from the field, including 22.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with five offensive rebounds and managed zero second chance points while Minot State cleared 35 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

After falling behind 20-19, Minot State went on a 9-0 run with 8:08 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Kody Dwyer, to take a 28-20 lead. The Beavers then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 41-28 advantage. Minot State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 28 of its 41 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 51-37 before going on a 17-0 run, finished off by Newbern's layup, to grow the lead to 68-37 with 12:21 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 98-54 win. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 32 of its 57 points in the lane.
