Beavers upset bid shortened at the hands of the 8th-ranked Mustangs

MINOT, ND --The Minot State volleyball team lost to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 3-2 (25-17, 18-25, 16-25, 28-26, 12-15) Friday at home at the MSU Dome.

The Beavers attack was paced by Emily Kotelnikoff, who finished with 14 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .375, and by Hailey Wathen, who had 11. Defensively, MSU had two players reach double figures in digs as Alexandra Koontz had 17 and Viktoria Sedova had 16.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Beavers grabbed control of the set-one lead at 5-4 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-17. Minot State led by 11 points at 20-9 before closing out the set. Minot State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | Minot State then fell in set two 25-18, evening the match at a set apiece. Minot State trailed by as many as seven points as Southwest Minnesota State grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that was tied up six times before the Mustangs took over the lead.

SET 3 | A third-set loss put Minot State behind 2-1. The Beavers dropped a tough set 25-16. Minot State trailed by as many as nine points as Southwest Minnesota State grabbed the advantage for good at 4-3 in a set that was tied up just once before the Mustangs took over the lead.

SET 4 | Minot State broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 28-26 victory in set number four. The Beavers survived a ferocious Southwest Minnesota State rally, hanging on to win after leading by seven points at 13-6 earlier in the set. Minot State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set. Minot State got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Southwest Minnesota State attacks in the stanza.

SET 5 | After dropping sets two and three, Minot State won set four, tying things up at 2-2 to force a fifth set, but couldn't complete the comeback, losing the set 15-12 and the match 3-2. The Beavers fell in a back-and-forth set five, losing in a stanza that featured three lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set.

The Beavers return to the court tomorrow to square off against the Sioux Falls Cougars with tip off set for 2 p.m.
