MINOT, ND --Max Cody collected a career-high 31 points to help lead the Minot State men's basketball team over the Saint Cloud State Huskies 89-81 at home Friday.
The Beavers (14-7, 8-7) had four players score in double figures, led by Cody, who had 31 points and six rebounds. Melvin Newbern tacked on 16 points and six rebounds and Sam Ohlrich chipped in as well with 10 points from the bench.
The Minot State offense made hay from deep, making 10 threes on 27 attempts. Jaxon Gunville hit three treys for the Beavers in the contest.
How It Happened
Minot State started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a three from Cody, to take an early lead with 18:48 left in the first half. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 48-46 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 48 points.
Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 70-67 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Gunville's three, to grow the lead to 77-67 with 5:18 to go in the contest. The Huskies narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 89-81 win. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 11 of its 41 total points.
