Newbern scores 27 points in Minot State's 84-78 overtime loss to Northern State

ABERDEEN, SD --Melvin Newbern scored 27 points, but the Minot State men's basketball team fell to the Northern State Wolves 84-78 on the road Thursday.

The Beavers (15-8, 9-8) had two players score in double figures, led by Newbern, who had 27 points and nine rebounds. Cam'ron Dunfee added 17 points and Max Cody added nine points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Minot State pulled down 39 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Northern State's 29, led by Newbern's nine boards.

How It Happened

After falling behind 19-11, Minot State went on a 10-0 run with 11:20 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Newbern, to take a 21-19 lead. The Beavers then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 35-32 advantage. Minot State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 35 points close to the basket.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Eli Cave's layup, to grow the lead to 50-38 with 13:30 to go in the contest. The Wolves then fought back to even things up at 74-74 and send the game to overtime. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 39 points in the lane.

Northern State then took control in overtime and won 84-78.
