MINOT, N.D. – What's turned into a week-long road trip continues for the Minot State softball team thanks to wintry weather back home.
The Beavers scheduled home doubleheader for Tuesday, April 26, against Minnesota State Moorhead has been moved to Moorhead, Minnesota, where Minot State (27-15 overall, 8-10 NSIC) will host the Dragons (6-32, 3-19) in NSIC action despite being away from home.
It's the second time in a week that snow in Minot has forced the Beavers to be the home team away from home as Minot State plays its seventh and eighth games on a road-trip that began with a neutral-site doubleheader on Thursday.
First pitch for the on-the-road home doubleheader will be 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, at the MSU Moorhead Nemzel Softball Field.
Big games for the Beavers who look to finish the regular season with a flurry of wins as they "host" the Dragons, then are scheduled to host Concordia, St. Paul on Saturday and Minnesota State, Mankato on Sunday at the South Hill Complex in doubleheaders.
While Minot State has been a tough foe the past week, the outcomes have not gone the Beavers way as they look to snap a five-game skid against a Dragons team in their own slump, having dropped their past eight contests.
Key all season has been a balanced approach for the Beavers, who continue to be a league-leader in defense, batting, and pitching as Minot State is tied for second in the NSIC in fielding percentage (.971), third in hitting with a .325 team batting average, and sixth in the league in team ERA at 3.24.
And, of course, stolen bases are a big factor in the Minot State attack as the Beavers have set a single-season school record with 149 stolen bases – and counting – second-most in the nation.
On the flip side, the Dragons have been solid defensively as they are sixth in the NSIC with a .962 fielding percentage, but a .219 batting average and a team ERA of 8.26 have kept Minnesota State Moorhead from excelling.
Players to watch for Minot State continue to be junior first baseman
Jamie Odlum, who is hitting .471 with a team-best 35 RBIs and 21 stolen bases, junior outfielder
Kiera Shwaluk, who is hitting .382 and leads the team with 22 stolen bases, and sophomore third baseman
Brooklyn Morrison, who is hitting .300 and has a team-high five home runs and 27 RBIs.
In the circle, senior
Trinity Valentine leads the way with team-highs in wins (11), innings pitched (104 1/3), ERA (2.68), and strikeouts (93), while sophomore
Jasmine Blizzard has six wins, a 2.70 ERA, and 50 Ks, and freshman
Reegan Floyd has eight wins, a 4.12 ERA, and 70 Ks, giving the Beavers plenty of pitching balance, as well.
Freshman infielder Annika Norman leads the Dragons with her .302 batting average and 12 RBIs, while freshman infielder and pitcher Avery Steffen is hitting .265 and leads MSU Moorhead with four home runs and 18 RBIs.
In the circle, senior Anna Lang has three wins, has started 14 games, and has struck out 29 opposing batters in 54 1/3 innings, and Steffen has added two wins in 10 starts and leads the team with 30 Ks in 44 innings.
