And the No. 1 NCAA moment is … Beaver baseball wins 2018 NSIC Championship

MINOT, N.D. – In July of 2012, Minot State Athletics took the historic step of moving from NAIA competition to the NCAA and in celebration of that 10th anniversary, Beaver Athletics is recognizing the Top 10 NCAA moments over the past decade as voted on by you, Minot State's fans.

It's time to reveal what you voted as the No. 1 moment in Minot State's NCAA history and it comes from a season-long effort on the diamond by the 2018 baseball team.

The No. 1 moment is …
  • In the spring of 2018, the Minot State baseball team dominated on the diamond, winning 29 of their final 35 games of the regular season as the Beavers rolled to the program's first NSIC regular season championship with a 29-6 league record. The Beavers run to the title started off with an extended road trip as Minot State opened with 10 non-conference road games and didn't see the friend confines of Corbett Field until April 19. Despite that fact, the Beavers took 3-of-4 from Winona State on the road, then set the tone for the season winning 3-of-4 from defending league champ Minnesota State, Mankato. Riding that moment, the Beavers swept Minnesota Crookston, Wayne State, and Northern State for a comfortable 14-2 start to the league race. Minot State finally made its true home debut on April 19, sweeping a doubleheader against Bemidji State, and kept on rolling with a 21-4 record before the lone bump in the road to the title as St. Cloud State swept a mid-week doubleheader in Minnesota. Minot State shook off the pair of losses by closing the season with eight straight wins, finishing 29-6 in NSIC playing and taking home the title over second-place Augustana (26-8) and third-place St. Cloud State (21-8). The run to the title truly proved a team effort as Minot State placed just four players on the All-NSIC Team led by 1st Team designated hitter Sal Rodriguez. He was joined by teammates Justin Demary (3B), Michael Borst (OF), and Wyatt Schlosser (OF), all of whom were 2nd Team All-Conference picks. Rodriguez led the team in RBIs (47) and hit .313 with 9 home runs, while Borst led the way with a .335 batting average, Schlosser hit .331 with 20 stolen bases, and Demary hit .313 and also picked up 5 wins pitching, leading the team with 58 strikeouts. Andres Hackman added 6 wins on mound, and Tannar Galey had 4 wins and a 0.76 ERA in 15 relief appearances for the league champs.

On July 1, 2012, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) officially accepted Minot State as a full member, and on July 13, 2012, Rick Hedberg, then-Director of Athletics at Minot State, announced that the Beavers had completed their time as probationary members of the NCAA and would begin competing as a full-fledged member of the NCAA Division II in September of 2012.
