BISMARCK, N.D. – Another record and three more wins: The Beavers made a triumphant return to track and field competition Saturday at the Mike Thorson Open hosted by the University of Mary.
Returning from the holiday break after more than a month off since last competing, the Minot State track and field teams turned in a strong performance as freshman
Summer Krebsbach led the way for the women, breaking her own school record in 60-meter dash.
On the men's side,
Nathan Trujillo-Aragon remained perfect this season in the 60-meter hurdles with his second win in two outings while teammates
Corbin Harris and
Jacob Jensen also added victories for the Beaver men in the weight throw and 1,000 meters, respectively.
"Coming back, they met expectations," Minot State coach Greggmar Swift said of the Beavers performance. "Athletes that won their events went out there and competed as expected, and athletes that were in the middle of the pack still performed extremely well as it pertains to time and running personal bests."
One student-athlete running a personal best was Krebsbach who broke the NCAA Division II school record in the 60-meter dash in her collegiate debut back in December, then broke her own record in the prelims on Saturday clocking a time of 8.00 seconds.
"It feels great," she said. "It's honestly surprising, I surprised myself, but I did put in the work; and I can't wait to see what I'm going to do next."
Krebsbach ended up third in the 60 finals in 8.09 seconds, and also added a third-place finish in the 200 in a personal-best time of 26.93 seconds.
Her efforts were part of a strong showing for the ladies who tacked on four more third-place finishes at the meet as
Nicole Reeves was third in 1,000 meters in a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 23.89 seconds,
Sidra Sadowsky was third in the mile in a personal-best time of 5:26.04,
Chloe Gunderson was third in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 25 inches, and the Beaver 4x400 relay team of Sadowsky, Krebsbach, Reeves, and
Paulette Dominguez was third in 4:36.77.
On the men's side, Trujillo-Aragon led the way for the second straight meet claiming his second straight 60-meter hurdles win with a time of 8.59 in the finals. He qualified for the finals with a meet-best 8.50, just fractions of a second off his own NCAA D-II school record in the event of 8.47, which he ran in 2021.
"I definitely had to put in a lot of work over the break, and I put in a lot of work since August and it paid off," Trujillo-Aragon said.
Adding to the victory rush was
Jacob Jensen who won the 1,000 meters in his first competition of the indoor season in 2:34.21, the top time this winter in the NSIC.
Juan Gutierrez and
Charles Hardcastle added personal bests as they finished second in the 600 (1:26.51) and 800 (2:01.32), respectively.
And in the field events,
Corbin Harris added the third win of the day for the Beavers in the weight throw with an effort of 49 feet, 9.25 inches while
Samuel Kreins was third in the shot put with a throw of 46-8.
Now back in full swing for the indoor season, the Beavers head to South Dakota next weekend to compete at South Dakota State in the D2 Invitational on Friday and the Jim Emmerich Alumni Invitational on Saturday.
