ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Minot State women's basketball team got an 18-point performance from the bench, but fell 60-42 to the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm at Civic Arena on Saturday in their final game of the Central Region Showcase.
Sydney Gustavsson led the Beavers (1-4 overall) with 10 points and four steals. Emma Mogen also added six points and two blocks and Maya Aguilar chipped in as well with two points and two blocks from the bench.
Minot State forced 18 Southern Nazarene turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into seven points on the other end of the floor. Gustavsson's four steals led the way for Minot State.
Minot State next makes its home debut at the MSU Dome hosting No. 12-ranked Montana State Billings next weekend on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m.
How It Happened
Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Southern Nazarene kept adding to that lead, building a 21-9 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Taylor Goss, to narrow its deficit to 21-15. Southern Nazarene responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Beavers trailing 28-19 heading into halftime.
Southern Nazarene continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 36-26 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Mogen, to trim its deficit to 36-31 with 2:47 to go in the third. Southern Nazarene countered and stretched its lead to 45-31 heading into the fourth. Minot State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.
Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 60-42. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint.
