Minot State loses to Montana State-Billings 79-62 after halftime lead



MINOT, ND --
The Minot State women's basketball team went into the half beating Montana State-Billings 33-31, but could not pull away in the second half and fell 79-62 to the Yellowjackets at home Saturday.


The Beavers (1-5) had two players score in double figures, led by Sydney Gustavsson, who had 15 points. Taylor Goss tacked on 12 points and Jaime Skeggs added four points and seven assists.


Minot State forced 17 Montana State-Billings turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Saturday's game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Maya Aguilar led the way individually with one steal.


How It Happened

After falling behind 10-9, Minot State went on a 5-0 run with 3:08 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Gustavsson, to take a 14-10 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-12 advantage. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 14 points close to the basket.


Montana State-Billings rallied to take a 23-19 lead before Minot State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 6:04 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Goss, to take a 25-23 lead. The Beavers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 33-31 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 19 points.


Minot State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Yellowjackets 56-47 entering the fourth. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.


Montana State-Billings kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 73-53 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Peyton Breidenbach's three, to shrink the deficit to 73-58 with 1:59 to go in the contest. Montana State-Billings responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 79-62. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
