Beaver women dominate in 30-point win in return from Christmas break

MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State women's basketball team started strong and never let up, holding South Dakota Mines to just 11.8 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-17 shooting performance on the way to an 81-51 win against the Hardrockers in non-conference basketball at the MSU Dome on Saturday.
 

The Beavers (4-11 overall, 1-5 NSIC) had five players score in double figures, led by Sydney Gustavsson, who had 18 points and four steals. Maya Aguilar tacked on 16 points and three steals off of the bench and Lorelei McIver helped out with 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals.


Minot State utilized fantastic ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 17 assists on 26 made field goals. Individually, Vilborg Jonsdottir was on top of the distribution list for the Beavers with five assists and Taylor Goss also added four assists of her own.


The Minot State defense held South Dakota Mines shooters to only 34.8 percent from the field, including 11.8 percent from three-point range.


How It Happened

After jumping out to a 13-4 advantage, Minot State went on an 8-0 run with 3:32 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Aguilar, to increase its lead to 21-4. The Beavers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter-break with a 25-6 advantage. Minot State capitalized on five South Dakota Mines turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.
 

Minot State kept its first-quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 8:31 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Gustavsson, to increase its lead to 33-12. The Beavers kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 46-25 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 21 points.
 

Following intermission, Minot State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 55-30 before going on an 8-0 run to expand its lead further to 63-30 with 6:34 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Beavers added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 71-36 edge. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 25 points in the paint.


The Beavers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring three of its 10 total points.
