Minot State shoots 61.5 from 3-point range but falls 75-67 to visiting Mary


 

MINOT, ND -- In spite of a 61.5 percent shooting effort from beyond the 3-point arc, the Minot State women's basketball team fell to the Mary Marauders 75-67 at home Saturday in NSIC action.
 

The Beavers (3-9 overall, 1-3 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Taylor Goss, who had 14 points and two steals. Emily Srejma tacked on 12 points off the bench and Maya Aguilar helped out with 10 points from the bench.
 

The Minot State offense was strong from beyond the arc, making eight threes on 13 attempts. Goss hit three treys for the Beavers in the contest.
 

Minot State forced 15 Mary turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Saturday's game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Goss' two steals led the way for Minot State.


Coach's Comments
"You always want to win your rivalry game but unfortunately we came up on the short end of that," Minot State head coach Mike Brandt said.

"I thought we worked really hard, I thought we did a lot of good things, the main thing I talked to the players about was continuing to stay positive; continue to keep working because that's a stacked team right there."

How It Happened

After falling behind 20-12, Minot State went on an 8-0 run with 2:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Ashley Wacha, to tie the game at 20, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.


Mary then took a 30-24 lead before Minot State responding by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Goss, to tie the game at 30. Neither team was able to gain an edge by halftime, as the two squads entered the break tied at 32-32. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 12 points close to the basket.


After intermission, Mary snatched a 43-35 lead before Minot State answered back by going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lorelei McIver, to trim its deficit to 43-40 with 6:12 to go in the third. Mary countered and stretched its lead to 59-48 heading into the fourth. Minot State took advantage of two Mary turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
 

Mary kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 69-56 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Goss' three, to shrink the deficit to 69-61 with 2:43 to go in the contest. The Beavers were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 75-67. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 19 total points.
