MANKATO, Minn. –
Trent Holiday set a new school record, Devontae Daley nearly did while qualifying for the finals, and both the Minot State distance medley relay teams earned the Beavers points on the first day of competition at the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato.
The championships conclude Sunday.
Holiday had one of the top performances for the Beaver men's team on Saturday as he finished ninth in the men's 1,000 meters in 2 minutes, 33.05 seconds, just missing out on a spot in the finals on Sunday, but good enough for a new NCAA Division II-era school record. He broke the old record of 2:33.85 run by current teammate
Jacob Jensen last year.
Nearly setting a new record was Daley in the men's 600 as he was sixth in the preliminaries in 1:24.42, an effort that earns him a spot in Sunday's event finals. His time was second-fastest in Minot State's D-II history, right behind a 1:21.39 run by
Lewis Cotterill last year.
While their individual efforts highlighted the opening day of competition, the Beaver men's and women's distance medley relay teams also enjoyed success as the men were seventh and set a new NCAA Division II-era school record, while the Beaver women were eighth.
The quartet of Nicholas Merillana,
Francis Short Bull,
Juan Gutierrez, and Jensen teamed up to finish the men's race in 10 minutes, 18.27 seconds, scoring two team points for Minot State and shaving fractions of a second off the previous Beaver best in the event of 10:18.66 they ran two weeks ago.
On the women's side,
Jessica Martinez,
Summer Krebsbach,
Sidra Sadowsky, and
Nicole Reeves teamed up to score one team point for Minot State with an eighth-place finish in 12:37.72.
