DULUTH, Minn. -- The Minot State men's basketball team moved into third place in the NSIC race with a strong 27-point showing from the bench on the way to an 85-69 win over the 24th-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on the road Saturday in NSIC action.
The Beavers (11-3 overall, 6-2 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Jaxon Gunville, who had 19 points and two steals. Khari Broadway tacked on 16 points and Connor Hollenbeck helped out with 12 points and six rebounds.
Caleb Van De Griend pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace the Minot State offense which grabbed 16 boards and turned them into 17 second-chance points.
Minot State did a great job disrupting Minnesota Duluth shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Dylan Gichaba led the way individually for the Beavers with two rejections.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 32-31 advantage, Minot State went on a 12-0 run with 5:25 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Van De Griend, to increase its lead to 44-31. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 47-37 advantage. Minot State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 16 of its 47 total points.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Gunville's three, to grow the lead to 67-50 with 8:59 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 85-69 win. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 11 of its 38 total points.
