Minot State falls in season opener to 8th-ranked Union

BILLINGS, Mont. -- The Minot State women's basketball team got a 28-point showing from the bench but fell 86-64 to the 8th-ranked Union Bulldogs at Alterowitz Gymnasium on Friday in the Division II CCA Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Montana State Billings.
 

Emma Mogen led the Beavers (0-1 overall) with 18 points. Sydney Gustavsson also tacked on nine points and six assists and Jessica Mogen helped out with four points and six rebounds off the bench.
 

Minot State out-rebounded Union 34-33 in Friday's game, led by six boards from Lorelei McIver.
 

Minot State forced 17 Union turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into nine points on the other end of the floor. Taylor Goss led the way individually with three steals.


Coaches Comments
"Union is a high-level team and ranked No. 8 in the country for a reason," Minot State head coach Ryan Clark said. "Their pressure got to us early and we got off to a slow start. However, I loved the way our team battled for the last three quarters. We showed a lot of positive signs in those quarters and I look forward to continuing to build off those quarters."

How It Happened

Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 46-25 halftime deficit.

Union continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 49-25 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Emma Mogen, to trim its deficit to 49-30 with 8:14 to go in the third. Union countered and stretched its lead to 69-45 heading into the fourth. Minot State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled eight of the team's 20 third-quarter points.
 

Union kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing an 81-55 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 81-61 with 3:47 to go in the contest. Union responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 86-64. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 19 points in the paint.
