MINOT, ND --Lara Dobbins, Maya Aguilar and Emma Mogen combined to score 48 of Minot State's 63 total points, but the Beavers fell to the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles 70-63 at home Tuesday.
Dobbins led the Beavers (1-7, 0-1) with 21 points and seven rebounds. Aguilar tacked on 15 points and Mogen helped out a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
"We came out with great energy and effort. I probably think it's the best we've competed for 4 quarters" said head coach, Ryan Clark.
The Minot State offense was very productive from three point land, pouring in 10 threes on 25 attempts. Dobbins was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining five treys in the contest.
The Minot State defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 15 Minnesota-Crookston turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the other end of the floor. Sydney Gustavsson led the way individually for the Beavers with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-2, Minot State went on a 13-0 run with 6:31 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Mogen, to take a 15-5 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-9 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 15 points.
The Beavers maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 34-29 edge. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 19 points close to the basket.
Minot State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Golden Eagles 57-45 entering the fourth. Minot State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 11 total points.
Minot State came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Dobbins' three, to shrink the deficit to 57-51 with 9:09 to go in the contest. Minnesota-Crookston responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 70-63. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.
