MOORHEAD, MN --Emma Mogen put the Minot State women's basketball team ahead for good with 1:40 to go the extra period to give the Beavers a 65-62 win over the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons on the road Friday.
The Beavers (3-9, 2-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Sydney Gustavsson, who had 18 points. Mogen added 15 points, five assists and two steals and Jaime Skeggs helped out with 11 points and three steals from the bench.
The Minot State offense was impressive from beyond the arc, pouring in 12 threes on 33 attempts. Gustavsson hit six treys for the Beavers in the contest.
The Minot State defense held the MSU Moorhead shooters to only 29.7 percent from the field, including 29.4 percent from three-point range. The Beavers also kept Karlee Fisher to 3-of-13 shooting and 10 points in the game.
How It Happened
Minot State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 9-7.
Minot State then started off the second quarter by going on an 8-0 run to take a 15-9 lead. The Dragons then came roaring back to take a 26-21 lead heading into halftime.
MSU Moorhead continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-27 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 38-32 with 2:17 to go in the third. MSU Moorhead countered and stretched its lead to 43-35 heading into the fourth. Minot State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points.
Minot State narrowed its deficit to 46-40 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Gustavsson's three, to even the score at 46 all with 5:28 to go in the fourth. Neither team was able to finish the game in regulation and the contest headed to overtime tied at 51-51. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 16 points.
Minot State then took care of business in extra time, outscoring MSU Moorhead 14-11 to seize victory by the 65-62 final score.
