Minot State rallies in 2nd half to topple Minnesota Duluth

MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State women's basketball team fought back from a 10-point deficit at 42-32 with 5:30 remaining in the third quarter to knock off the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 66-54 at home Friday in NSIC action.


The Beavers (9-19 overall, 6-13 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Lorelei McIver, who had 21 points and eight rebounds. Maya Aguilar tacked on 10 points and two steals off of the bench and Jaime Skeggs helped out with 10 points.


Minot State pulled down 31 rebounds in Friday's game compared to Minnesota Duluth's 24, led by McIver's eight boards.


Minot State forced 13 Minnesota Duluth turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Friday's game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Aguilar's two steals led the way for Minot State.
 

Coach's Comments
"Duluth had won seven in a row against Minot and being the defending national runner-up -- what an exciting win for our team," Minot State head coach Mike Brandt said. "The players were super excited and we needed the win to keep pace for our quest to make the playoffs."

How It Happened

Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-8 at the end of the first quarter.


The Beavers fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 29-22 by the time halftime rolled around.


Minnesota Duluth continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-29 advantage before Minot State went on a 17-0 run, punctuated by a three from Aguilar, to grab a 46-42 lead with one second to go in the third. Minot State took advantage of four Minnesota Duluth turnovers in the quarter, scoring 10 points off of takeaways.


Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 58-52 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 64-52 with 58 seconds to go in the contest. The Beavers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 66-54 win. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
