Beavers go 2-2 in Live 1st Homecoming Classic

MINOT, ND --On Saturday, September 14, the Minot State Volleyball team competed in the final two matches of the Live 1st Homecoming Classic. After going 1-1 on Friday, the Beavers matched up against Brandon University followed by Mayville State University to close out the Homecoming Weekend.

In game 1, the Minot State volleyball team displayed impressive resilience in a 3-2 win against Brandon University Saturday at home at MSU Dome.

The out-of-conference win improved Minot State's overall record to 1-5 on the season. This win against Brandon University was also the first career win for head coach Alex Courtney.

Bailee Brommenschenkel finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Beavers attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .273. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Kelci Madrid had 16 and Viktoria Sedova had 11.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Beavers grabbed control of the set-one lead at 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-16. Minot State opened its biggest lead, nine points, to close out the set.

SET 2 | Minot State then lost the second set 26-24, evening things at a set each. The Beavers dropped a tight second set, losing in a stanza that was tied 11 times and had three lead changes.

SET 3 | Minot State fought back after the second-set loss to grab set three and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Beavers came out on top of a close battle, winning 26-24 in a set that was tied six times and had two lead changes.

SET 4 | Minot State couldn't finish off a four-set win as Brandon forced a fifth set with a 25-21 victory. grabbed the advantage for good at 22-21 and Minot State was never able to recover in a set that was tied up nine times before Brandon took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 5 | Minot State and Brandon went back and forth all game, trading set wins until the Beavers took the fifth set 15-10 and the match. The Beavers took the lead for good at 8-7 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Beavers took over the lead.

The Minot State volleyball team dropped game 2 against Mayville State University on Saturday in four sets (23-25, 17-25, 25-18, 20-25).

The non-conference loss dropped Minot State to 1-6 on the season.

The Beavers offense was paced by Maddy Boop, who finished with 11 kills on the day. Paulina Kowalska added 10 and Bailee Brommenschenkel chipped in with 10 as part of a balanced Minot State attack. Defensively, had four players reach double figures in digs, highlighted by Faith Di Mola's 20, 18 from Bailey Munson, and 15 more from Emily Barker. From the front row, Brommenschenkel contributed six blocks and Kowalska added five rejections.

SET 1 | The Beavers came up short in a back-and-forth first set, losing 25-23 in a game that featured five lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match.

SET 2 | Minot State lost set two 25-17, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. The Beavers fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Minot State got on the board with a victory in the third set to make it a 2-1 match. The Beavers won the set 25-18. Minot State took the lead for good at 13-12 in a set that had just one lead change before the Beavers took over the lead.

SET 4 | Minot State couldn't keep the rally going and lost in set four 25-20 to drop the match. The Beavers trailed by as many as eight points as Mayville grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 and Minot State was never able to recover in a set that was tied up just once before Mayville took over the lead.

The Beavers are back in action on Friday, September 20 at 6:00 pm as they open conference play against Southwest Minnesota State University at home at the MSU Dome.
