Big games from Hamling, Dobbins and Mogen not enough in Minot State's 54-41 loss to Saint Martin's

LANGLEY EVENTS CENTRE, Langley --Taryn Hamling, Lara Dobbins and Jessica Mogen combined to score 31 of Minot State's 41 total points, but the Beavers fell to the Saint Martin's Saints 54-41 at Friday.

The Beavers (0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Hamling, who had 11 points and three steals. Dobbins tacked on 10 points and Mogen helped out with 10 points and three steals.

The Minot State defense held Saint Martin's shooters to just 33.3 percent from the field, including 25.9 percent from three-point range.

How It Happened

Minot State started out the scoring by going on a 13-0 run, culminating in a three from Maya Aguilar, to take an early lead with 5:13 left in the first quarter. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-12 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 15 points.

The Beavers surrendered their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime with the score tied 25-25. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.

The two teams each put up 10 points in the third quarter, leaving the game tied at 35-35 heading to the fourth. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 10 points in the paint.

Saint Martin's broke the tie, taking control in the final quarter winning 54-41. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its six points.
