Minot State rallies late, but loses to Montana State-Northern 67-59

HAVRE, MT --The Minot State women's basketball team took a 45-43 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 67-59 to the Montana State-Northern Northern Lights on the road Sunday.

The Beavers (0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Maya Aguilar, who had 14 points and six rebounds. Tiyahna Trottier tacked on 12 points and Jessica Mogen helped out with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

The Minot State defense held Montana State-Northern shooters to just 38.7 percent from the field, including 26.9 percent from three-point range. The Beavers also kept Becky Melcher to 4-of-14 shooting in the game. The Northern Lights did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only six offensive rebounds and scored two second chance points while Minot State pulled down 26 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Beavers fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 30-26 by the time halftime rolled around.

Following halftime, Minot State kept the Northern Lights from growing their lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Mogen, to grab a 42-36 lead with 4:22 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Northern Lights had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 45-43 edge. Minot State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.

Montana State-Northern then erased the Minot State lead in the game's final quarter for a 67-59 comeback victory. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its 14 total points.
