Hamling's dagger shot leads Minot State over Montana State-Billings 77-70

MINOT, ND --
Taryn Hamling nailed a dagger 3-pointer with 1:11 left in the game to put Minot State up 71-63, and the Beavers secured a 77-70 victory against the Montana State-Billings Yellowjackets at home Tuesday.

The Beavers (1-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Hamling, who had 18 points and seven rebounds. Tiyahna Trottier tacked on 15 points and six rebounds and Jessica Mogen chipped in as well with 13 points and four assists.

Minot State's defense held Montana State-Billings to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Yellowjackets did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed six second chance points.

How It Happened

After falling behind 10-8, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 2:09 left in the first quarter to take a 14-10 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 14-11 advantage. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 14 points close to the basket.

Montana State-Billings fought back to tie the game at 18-18 before Minot State went on a 10-0 run starting at the 6:17 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Maya Aguilar, to take a 28-18 lead. The Yellowjackets cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 35-26 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State saw non-starters score nine of its 21 total points off the bench in the quarter.

After intermission, Minot State held on to its advantage and owned a 52-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Minot State turned three offensive rebounds into three second chance points on the way to scoring 17 total points in the quarter.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 61-49 with 6:24 to go in the contest. The Yellowjackets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 77-70 win.

When asked about the win, sophomore guard Taryn Hamling said "It feels awesome. I mean, we've been working so hard these past couple days and these past couple of weeks, and we know we really wanted it. We said we were on a revenge tour, so that's it. It was really awesome to finally get that first official win."
