MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team kept to just 14.3 percent from beyond the arc in a 5-for-35 shooting performance on the way to an 88-55 victory against the at home Wednesday. Alongside their victory, the Beavers rewrote the record books, knocking down a program-best of 15 three-pointers. Nine different players contributed to the historic shooting performance.Â
The Beavers (2-5) had five players score in double figures, led by Maya Aguilar, who had 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Jessica Mogen tacked on 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks and Tiyahna Trottier helped out with 11 points and two blocks.
Minot State out-rebounded 54-37 in Wednesday's game, led by 10 boards from Lara Dobbins. The Beavers also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second chance points.
Minot State's defense held to only 14.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29 percent from the field. The Beavers also limited Jayden Wiest to 0-of-8 shooting from downtown and two points in the game.
When asked about what felt different in today's game compared to games earlier in the season, junior guard Maya Aguilar said "I think getting that first game really got us on a roll. We got tired of losing and we know that we can play to a different standard. I think that overall, as a team we are doing way better at just like moving the ball and finding each other. I think that is a big step that we've taken from the start of the season until now."
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 12-6 advantage, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 4:20 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Dobbins, to increase its lead to 18-6. The Beavers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 33-19 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 33 points.
Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run starting at the 4:15 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 48-30, a score that would hold until halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 15 points.
Following intermission, Minot State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 53-32 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Mogen, to expand its lead further to 58-32 with 5:10 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 62-44 edge. Minot State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points.
Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 70-50 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Maya Vibeto's layup, to grow the lead to 80-50 with 2:54 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 88-55 win. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 26 points in the paint.
