Hamling's dagger shot leads Minot State past South Dakota Mines 75-69

RAPID CITY, SD --Taryn Hamling nailed a dagger 3-pointer with 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter to put Minot State ahead 72-65, and the Beavers earned a 75-69 victory over the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers on the road Saturday.

The Beavers (3-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Hamling, who had 28 points and three steals. Tiyahna Trottier tacked on 16 points, six rebounds and two blocks and Maya Aguilar helped out with 12 points and six rebounds.

The Minot State offense was very productive from deep, knocking down 10 threes on 26 attempts. Hamling was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining five treys in the contest.

How It Happened

After falling behind 14-10, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 3:32 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Trottier, to take a 16-14 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 22-21 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 22 points.

South Dakota Mines rallied to take a 28-24 lead before Minot State went on an 8-0 run starting at the 5:46 mark in the second period to take a 32-28 lead. The Hardrockers cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 33-32 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 11 points close to the basket.

South Dakota Mines then took a 48-47 lead following intermission before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Lara Dobbins, to grab a 52-48 lead with 1:17 to go in the third. The Hardrockers then rallied to tie it at 52-52 heading into the fourth quarter. Minot State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.

Minot State started the fourth with a bang, going on a 13-0 run, finished off by Hamling's three, to seize a 65-52 lead with 4:45 to go in the contest. The Hardrockers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 75-69 win.
