MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team shot 50 percent from deep on the way to a 97-88 win at home Thursday. The Beavers not only finished the day with a win, but also with three separate records. Minot State set an all-time record for single game scoring with 97 points, a new team record for three-pointers with 18, and Tiyahna Trottier set a personal career-high of 29 points.
The Beavers (4-5, 1-1) had five players score in double figures, led by Tiyahna Trottier, who had 29 points. Maya Aguilar added 17 points, four assists and two steals and Jaime Skeggs chipped in as well with 17 points off the bench.
Minot State shared the ball well in Thursday's game, racking up 20 assists on 32 made field goals. Taryn Hamling's five assists paced the Beavers.
Minot State forced 15 turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Aguilar's two steals led the way for Minot State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-12, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 2:24 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Trottier, to take an 18-13 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 7:31 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Lara Dobbins, to increase its lead to 31-19. The cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 43-34 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State saw non-starters score seven of its 25 total points off the bench in the quarter.
Minot State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Skeggs, to expand its lead further to 64-49 with 4:10 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Beavers added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 76-59 edge. Minot State knocked down 11 three-pointers in the quarter to score 33 of its 33 total points.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 86-72 with 3:57 to go in the contest. The narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 97-88 win.
