ABERDEEN, SD --The Minot State women's basketball team took a 46-45 lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 68-62 to the Northern State Wolves on the road Saturday.
The Beavers (4-6, 1-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Taryn Hamling, who had 21 points and two steals. Lara Dobbins added 12 points and six rebounds and Jessica Mogen added nine points and four assists.
The Minot State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in eight threes on 25 attempts. Hamling was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining five treys in the contest.
Minot State forced 15 Northern State turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 15 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hamling's two steals led the way for Minot State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-2, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 7:48 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Tiyahna Trottier, to take a 9-3 lead. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 15-14.
The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 30-23 halftime deficit.
Northern State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 33-23 advantage before Minot State went on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a three from Hamling, to grab a 34-33 lead with 5:51 to go in the third. The Beavers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 46-45 edge. Minot State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 23 total points.
Northern State proceeded to take a 64-57 lead before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Hamling's three, to shrink the deficit to 64-62 with 1:05 to go in the contest. Northern State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 68-62. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
