MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team shot 50 percent from deep on the way to a 78-68 victory over the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons at home Thursday.
The Beavers (5-6, 2-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Tiyahna Trottier, who had 16 points and four blocks. Taryn Hamling tacked on 14 points and eight rebounds and Maya Aguilar chipped in as well with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Minot State offense was very productive from three point land, making 16 threes on 32 attempts. Trottier was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining three treys in the contest.
The Minot State defense held Minnesota State-Moorhead shooters to just 30.7 percent from the field, including 25.8 percent from three-point range. The Beavers also kept Aubrey Morrison to 3-of-12 shooting in the game.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 4-2 advantage, Minot State went on a 10-0 run with 6:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Aguilar, to increase its lead to 14-2. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-7 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 8:58 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Jaime Skeggs, to increase its lead to 24-9. The Dragons cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 32-27 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 15 points.
Minot State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run to expand its lead further to 42-32 with 6:37 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Dragons had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 55-51 edge. Minot State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 23 total points.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Lorelei Nelson's three, to grow the lead to 69-57 with 4:30 to go in the contest. The Dragons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 78-68 win. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 23 points.
