BEMIDJI, MN --Jessica Mogen totaled 29 points, smashing her previous career-high of 21. Taryn Hamling also significantly contributed to the win by adding 23 points as the Minot State women's basketball team knocked off the Bemidji State Beavers 84-71 on the road Saturday.
Mogen and Hamling's stellar scoring performances led the Beavers (7-7, 4-3) in the contest. Mogen tacked on three assists and Hamling added six rebounds and two steals. Tiyahna Trottier also helped out with 13 points and two blocks.
Minot State forced 16 Bemidji State turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Hamling's two steals led the way for Minot State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 20-10, Minot State went on a 10-0 run with 2:22 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Mogen, to tie the game at 20. The game stayed close for the remainder of the first, as the Beavers finished the period with the score tied at 22-22. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.
Minot State turned the first quarter tie into a 31-30 lead before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Trottier, to increase its lead to 37-30. The Beavers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 47-38 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring 18 of its 25 points close to the basket.
Minot State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run to expand its lead further to 55-40 with 7:35 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Beavers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 64-57 edge. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 80-67 with 48 seconds to go in the contest. The Beavers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 84-71 win.
