MINOT, ND --Emma Mogen and Jessica Mogen combined to score 42 points in the Minot State Beavers' 70-69 victory against the Augustana Vikings at home Thursday.
Emma Mogen led the Beavers (9-19, 8-13) with 26 points and three steals. Jessica Mogen added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists and Sydney Gustavsson chipped in as well with 15 points and two steals.
The Minot State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making 10 threes on 25 attempts. Gustavsson was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining three treys in the contest.
Minot State forced 20 Augustana turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Thursday's game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Emma Mogen's three steals led the way for Minot State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-4, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 5:18 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jessica Mogen, to take a 10-6 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 15-14 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
The Beavers used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 33-31 edge. Minot State forced eight Augustana turnovers in the period and turned them into five points.
Minot State surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 46-46 they went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Emma Mogen, to grab a 55-46 lead with five seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Minot State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 22 total points.
Minot State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Katie Aberle's layup, to grow the lead to 62-46 with 7:20 to go in the contest. The Vikings narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still held on for the 70-69 win. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 15 points.
