Gunville shoots for career high, Van De Griend eclipses record in Beavers Senior Day win over Wayne State College

MINOT, ND – Jaxon Gunville totaled a career-high 31 points, while Caleb Van De Griend set a single-season scoring record to help lead the Minot State men's basketball team past the Wayne State Wildcats 84-80 at home Saturday on Senior Day.

The Beavers (23-8, 14-8 NSIC) had 4 players score in double figures, led by Gunville, who had 31 points. Caleb Van De Griend added a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Ayouba Berthe helped out with 15 points.

The Minot State offense was very productive from three-point land, pouring in 14 threes on 35 attempts. Gunville was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining 10 treys in the contest, which tied a single-game record.

Gunville and the Beavers surrendered a 16-point lead late in the second half but were able to step up late again to finish out the regular season with the win.

"We have just been a battle-tested team all year. We have had a lot of games especially at home that we have finished off late where things maybe were not going quite our way at the end…we had a lot of guys make huge plays down the stretch," Gunville said.

How It Happened
After falling behind 3-2, Minot State went on an 8-0 run with 17:56 left in the first half to take a 10-3 lead. The Beavers then added 7 points to that lead by the end of the frame and entered halftime with a 45-31 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down 8 shots to account for 24 of its 45 points.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Gunville's three, to grow the lead to 55-39 with 15:29 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still held on for the 84-80 win. Minot State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting 6 shots from deep to score 18 of its 39 points.
